Girls, Inc. National History
Girls Inc. National
1/9/2007
The first "Girls Club" was founded in Waterbuy, Connecticut in 1864 to provide a daily program of social and educational pursuits for girls and young women in the community. In 1945 nineteen clubs with assets totaling $72.00, formed an affilitation called " Girls Clubs of America". Since that time, Girls Incorporated has grown into a national organization of over 1000 sites nationwide, and serves more than 350,000 young people. In 2004, Girls Inc. celebrated it's 140th anniversary.

At Girls Clubs of America's annual conference in April 1990, the membership voted to change its name to Girls Incorporated. Girls Incorporated is guided by the same philosophy that has governed Girls Clubs of Amercia throughout its history.

The purpose of Girls Incorporated is to assist its affiliates in effectively meeting the needs of girls in their communities; to help girls overcome the effects of discrimination and to develop their capacity to be self-sufficient, responsible members of the community; and to serve as a vigorous advocate for girls, focusing attention on their special needs.

The National office of Girls Incorporated is located at 30 East 33rd Street, New York, New York. Girls Incorporated has a National Resource Center in Indianapolis, and an office for advocacy in Washington, D.C.

Girls Incorporated provides age appropriate, comprehensive programming which has been researched and field-tested. Programs are available for use on the local level by member affiliates. Programs such as Operation SMART (Science, Math, and related technology), PAP (Preventing Adolescent Pregnancy), and Media Literacy are a few of many programs offered that have been specifically designed to meet the needs of girls and to give girls the tools they need to be strong, smart, and bold. Girls Incorporated also provides a variety of scholarship programs for girl members. In the spring of 1993, Samantha Tennant was awarded a $10,000 scholarship in the Scholars program.

Girls Incorporated offers training opportunities for local staff members as well as board members in the form of National and Regional Conferences. Cluster trainings are also frequently available to members. Executive and Program Directors must attend Management Training Seminar and Program Directors Training, respectively, as required by membership in Girls Incorporated.
